Most of us long for simple answers. Am I permitted to use three minutes of a feature film in my home movie? Can I take the six notes from a song I love and incorporate those notes into my own song? Can I download a picture from the Internet and use it on the cover of my book? Although many would like a simple “yes” or “no,” the plain language of the Copyright Act is extremely instructive, but apparently often ignored. By using a few simple tools to understand the “Fair Use” doctrine, you can have enough information to make a sound decision.**
